What is Yoga?
Yoga is an ancient science and philosophy which originated in India and encompasses practices of asana (postures), pranayama (breathing techniques), relaxation, meditation and chanting. The Sanskrit word yoga translated means ‘union’ or ‘oneness’.
The essence of yoga is freedom from fear, doubt or inhibition bringing you happiness and inner peace.
The ancient yogis recognized this challenge. Today we live in the age of technology, time-saving gadgets, fast cars, fast food and fast schedules and the challenge for inner peace and happiness is even greater. The world keeps turning and changes will inevitably happen in life. When practicing yoga we develop a healthy relationship with ourselves and from this we are better equipped to deal with change and stress.
So the challenge becomes one of experiencing happiness despite what life brings.
The practice of yoga is a means of balancing and harmonizing the body, breath, mind and spirit. Yoga promotes greater health and vitality and a sense of well being that touches every part of our lives. Yoga empowers us to feel fulfilled and reach our full potential.
There are many styles of yoga, but they all originate from Hatha yoga.
